Mercedes Citan engine problems

My 2023 Mercedes Citan with a Gasoline engine is giving me fits. It's clocked 174427 km and suddenly the engine refuses to start sometimes. Other times it stalls at idle, runs rough as guts, and the check engine light is mocking me. I'm also burning through fuel like crazy. I ran a diagnostic and it's throwing a fuel pump error. I checked the basics – fuses are fine. Could a dodgy cable or plug connection to the pump really cause all this chaos?

Whoa that sounds rough! I had a similar problem with my old Volvo – different beast I know, but the symptoms were eerily similar. It turned out to be a faulty connection on the fuel pump relay. Basically, the relay wasn't consistently sending power to the fuel pump. Is the fuel pump relay something you've checked out too?

Interesting you mention the fuel pump relay. I hadn’t considered that, I was so focused on the pump itself. How did you figure out it was the relay and not something else like the fuel injector or the pump itself? What kind of automotive diagnosis steps did you take?

Okay so, in my case, I did some digging online and found a forum post describing almost the exact same symptoms. Turns out Volvos of that era were notorious for relay issues. I tested the relay with a multimeter to check for continuity, and it was all over the place. Honestly, with the symptoms you're describing, especially the stalling and rough running, along with the error code, it really does sound like a fueling issue. Honestly, without proper equipment, pinpointing it yourself can be a pain. Maybe a trip to a trusted workshop is in order? They have the tools for pinpoint accuracy.

Thanks for the insights! I took your advice and had a proper diagnostics done. Turns out it WAS a corroded connector on the fuel pump, just like the error code suggested! The mechanic cleaned everything up and replaced the connector. Total cost was 95€. Car performance is back to normal, and hopefully my fuel consumption will be too. Appreciate the help!
