Thanks for the quick response! I did try wiggling the connector, but no luck. Is there anything specific I should be looking for? Maybe a particular way the switch should be seated or any telltale signs of damage?

I didn't mess with the switch myself. I took mine to the shop, and they said it was a simple fix, something about the switch being sensitive to pressure. Honestly, it's probably best to let a professional handle it before you make it worse.

You were right, it was a ridiculously simple fix. Turns out, I had knocked the brake switch slightly out of alignment when I was messing around under the brake pedal. A quick adjustment and everything is working perfectly again. The error message is gone, brake lights are back, and the car is happy. Total cost: 0€.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my CLK, though I can't recall the exact year. Brake light failure and error messages. Did you try just wiggling the connector on the brake switch? Sometimes they can be a bit loose.
