Mercedes CLK diesel MAF sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Mercedes CLK diesel exhibited symptoms of a faulty mass air flow (MAF) sensor, including high fuel consumption, stalling, a check engine light, and smoke during acceleration. The issue was suspected to be the MAF sensor, and it was suggested to check the air filter and intake for debris that could affect sensor readings. Ultimately, a mechanic confirmed the MAF sensor was faulty, and replacing it resolved the issues.

I appreciate your quick reply. Can you tell me more about how you checked the air filter and air intake, or any diagnostic steps you found helpful in finding the problem?

I didn't do anything fancy. I looked at the air filter to see if it was really dirty and checked the air intake for anything blocking it. When the symptoms match that closely I usually just replace the MAF. I'd suggest taking it to a good shop to be sure.

Thanks for your help. I spoke to a mechanic, and they said the MAF sensor was bad. Replacing it fixed the problems, and it cost 365€. The car is running like it should now.

Sounds like a textbook MAF sensor failure. I had similar issues on my CLK. Check engine light, poor fuel economy... the works. Did you check the air filter and air intake? Debris can sometimes mess with the MAF readings.
