Mercedes CLK Diesel Water Sensor Issue

My 2005 Mercedes CLK diesel has a persistent check engine light and rough running engine. Car diagnostics indicate a water sensor malfunction. The error is stored in the error memory. I suspect an electrical fault, like a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm concerned about potential repair costs. I hope it's just a sensor testing issue and not the water sensor itself.

Summary of the thread

A 2005 Mercedes CLK diesel owner experienced a persistent check engine light and rough engine performance, with diagnostics indicating a water sensor malfunction. Suspecting an electrical fault, such as a defective cable or plug connection, the owner sought advice. A similar case suggested checking the sensor plug for corrosion or damage. Upon inspection by a mechanic, the issue was confirmed to be a corroded plug connection, which was cleaned, resolving the problem without needing to replace the sensor.

I had a similar problem with my CLK. Same symptoms, check engine light and everything. It could be a faulty connection like you suspect. Have you checked the sensor plug for corrosion or damage? Also, what's the exact error code you're getting?

Thanks for the reply. I haven't checked the sensor plug myself. Where is it located, and is it easy to access? I don't have the exact error code right now, but I can get it from the car diagnostics printout. I'll check the plug connection myself.

The water sensor is usually located near the fuel filter. It isn't too difficult to get to, but you might need to remove some covers or hoses. If you're not comfortable with electrical work, it might be best to take it to a workshop. It could be something simple, but you don't want to make it worse.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a mechanic. It was a corroded plug connection, like we suspected. They cleaned it and charged me 95€, which is better than replacing the whole sensor. I appreciate your help pointing me in the right direction.
