Mercedes CLK engine knocking sound

My 2001 Mercedes CLK with a gasoline engine is giving me fits It's got 281904 km on the clock, and recently it's developed this really nasty knocking sound, especially when I accelerate Feels like I'm losing power, and it's jerking like crazy To top it off, I'm getting smoke out the back when I put my foot down I scanned it, and yeah, there's an error code stored I'm thinking maybe it's something to do with deposits in the combustion chamber Any ideas Could it be bad fuel octane

Summary of the thread

A 2001 Mercedes CLK with a gasoline engine developed a knocking sound, power loss, jerking, and smoke during acceleration. The issue was suspected to be related to combustion chamber deposits or bad fuel octane. After visiting a workshop, the problem was confirmed to be due to combustion chamber deposits, which were cleaned, resolving the knocking issue. The knock sensor and ignition timing were also checked and found to be in good condition.

Whoa, that sounds rough I had a similar issue with my old Nissan, though it was a diesel Knocking, power loss, the whole shebang I think it could be the combustion chamber, like you said Have you checked the knock sensor That can mess with the ignition timing Could also be cylinder heads Is the check engine light on

The check engine light is on, solid as can be What exactly does the knock sensor do And cylinder heads Are those expensive I'm not super familiar with all this engine stuff, so ELI5 would be appreciated

Okay, the knock sensor basically listens for that knocking sound – pinging – and tells the computer to adjust the ignition timing to stop it If it's faulty, the timing could be off, causing the knocking and other problems As for cylinder heads, I'm not 100% sure, but I'd advise you to visit a workshop to be on the safe side

Thanks a ton for the insight I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on with the combustion chamber deposits They cleaned it out, and the knocking is gone They also checked the knock sensor and ignition timing, all good now Total cost was 425€, not cheap, but way better than a new engine At least now I know more about fuel octane and combustion chambers
