Mercedes CLK Engine Won't Start Battery Cables Suspected

My 2000 Mercedes CLK with a gasoline engine won't start. I suspect an engine control malfunction. The car only has 25487 km on it. Could bad battery cable connections cause this? I don't want to chase an ECU issue unnecessarily. Engine light is on.

I had something similar happen with my CLK. Engine light came on, and the engine would occasionally surge then stall. Turned out to be corrosion on the battery terminals. Check those connections thoroughly. Clean them up and see if that fixes it before you start thinking about the ECU.

When you say 'similar', do you mean completely dead, won't even crank? Because that's what's happening with mine. Or was yours just rough running before it died?

Mine would crank, but not start sometimes. Other times it would start rough, surge a bit, then die. But I'd still check those battery connections. If they're loose or corroded, it can cause all sorts of weird electrical issues that trigger the engine fault. If cleaning the terminals doesn't solve it, a workshop visit might be in order.

Thanks for the advice. Cleaned the battery cable connections, and that did the trick. Cost me 155€ for the cleaning at the workshop. Runs perfectly now.
