Mercedes E Klasse audio system failure

My Mercedes E Klasse, build year 2007 with a gasoline engine, has a dead audio system. No sound whatsoever. The error memory shows a fault, but no specifics. I suspect the display unit is broken. I was getting speaker crackle and static noise intermittently before it died. Could this be a head unit Bluetooth problem, or is my initial diagnosis correct?

I had a similar sound system problem in my E Klasse. Check the amplifier in the trunk. Sometimes water gets in there and fries it, and that could cause speaker crackle. Does the display light up at all?

Good point about the amp location. I'll check for water intrusion there first. When you say 'similar', did you have the exact same symptoms: complete silence and a stored error? The display lights up and seems to function normally, just no audio output.

Yeah, complete silence. Display was fine too. My mechanic said the MOST bus, the fiber optic network, can be a pain. Given the speaker crackle beforehand, and no sound now, it does sound like the amp or head unit. If you're not comfortable digging into the MOST bus, a workshop might be best to diagnose.

Thanks for the tip on the amp location and the MOST bus info. It was indeed the display defective, as suspected. 725€ later and the sound system is back. I appreciate the input!
