Mercedes E Klasse Exhaust Temperature Sensor Issue

My 2010 Mercedes E Klasse diesel is throwing a CEL and feels like it's lost power. Mileage is 121580 km. Fuel consumption has increased. Scanning the codes points to a faulty exhaust temperature sensor. I suspect a leak in the exhaust system. Has anyone else dealt with something similar on their E Klasse? Any pointers before I start?

I have an E Klasse, though a slightly different year. Your symptoms sound eerily familiar to an issue I encountered. A faulty exhaust sensor can trigger reduced power and increased fuel consumption as the engine's emission control system isn't getting accurate feedback. Have you inspected the exhaust system components for any obvious signs of damage or corrosion before replacing the sensor?

Thanks for the quick response. I haven't inspected the exhaust system thoroughly yet. Was the temperature sensor itself faulty, or was something else within the exhaust system that caused the sensor to throw an error? Did you observe any other symptoms?

In my case, the temperature sensor issue was triggered by a small crack in one of the exhaust pipes upstream of the sensor. The sensor was reporting the abnormal temperature caused by the escaping exhaust gases. I recommend taking it to a reputable workshop so they can carry out proper diagnostics. They will be able to check the entire exhaust system and confirm the source of the fault.

Appreciate the advice! I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on. There was a small leak in the exhaust manifold that was causing the temperature sensor to freak out. New exhaust component installed, sensor replaced, and everything's back to normal. Total cost was 265€ but at least the emission control is working and the car runs smoothly again.
