Mercedes E Klasse high fuel consumption and stalling
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Mercedes E Klasse is experiencing high fuel consumption, engine stalling at idle, and smoke during acceleration, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor, leading to an incorrect air-fuel ratio and performance decline. A similar issue was resolved in another vehicle by addressing the MAF sensor, and checking for air intake leaks was also suggested. A diagnostic scan confirmed the MAF sensor issue, and it was repaired at a workshop.

Thanks for the info An air intake leak is a good point I'll check for that When your MAF sensor failed on the BMW, did you notice any specific behavior other than what you described Was the performance decline gradual, or did it happen suddenly

The performance decline was gradual initially, almost imperceptible Then one day, the engine started stalling at idle, and the check engine light illuminated I'd advise getting a diagnostic scan to confirm the error codes While you might be able to replace the sensor yourself, a proper diagnostic will rule out other potential issues If it is the MAF sensor, I would suggest getting it to the workshop as soon as possible

Thanks for confirming that it could be the MAF sensor I did some further investigation and confirmed that it was the problem I took it to the workshop, and it cost me 365€ to get it repaired

That sounds awfully familiar I experienced nearly identical issues with my old BMW 3 Series a few years back Same symptoms: engine stalling, check engine light, and even the smoke during acceleration After a thorough diagnostic, it turned out to be a faulty MAF sensor as well Have you checked for any obvious air intake leaks A leak could exacerbate the problem and might even be the root cause, although a sensor failure is definitely plausible given the symptoms
