Mercedes E Klasse Radio Reception Problems

My Mercedes E Klasse from build year 2007 with a Gasoline engine, has about 251370 km on the clock. Lately, the radio reception has been dreadful. I keep getting an error message on the infotainment system, and half the time the audio system just doesn't work at all. I scanned for error codes, and there's something stored related to the antenna. Could a defective antenna cause all these problems? I am getting poor signal and radio interference, and it is driving me nuts.

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Mercedes E Klasse is experiencing poor radio reception, with error messages on the infotainment system and intermittent audio issues. The problem is likely related to a defective antenna, as indicated by stored error codes. It is advised to have a qualified mechanic diagnose and potentially replace the antenna to resolve the issue.

I understand your frustration. I have a similar Mercedes E Klasse, and I experienced analogous radio reception issues. The vehicle electronics in these models can be quite sensitive. Poor signal strength is often indicative of an antenna problem, but it can also be related to the wiring or the receiver module itself. Have you checked the antenna connection at the back of the radio unit? Is the FM signal consistent?

Thanks for the quick response! I haven't actually checked the antenna connection myself, as I'm not really confident pulling apart the dashboard. Where exactly is the receiver module located? And where is the antenna connection?

I strongly suggest against attempting to access the receiver module and antenna connection without proper tools and expertise. You risk causing further damage to the vehicle electronics. While it is possible the antenna connection is loose, the error code points more directly toward a defective antenna. Considering the symptoms and error message, I recommend having a qualified mechanic diagnose the issue. A broken antenna is a common problem that can manifest like this. As an anecdote, my local workshop was able to do it for about 255€.

Okay, that's good advice. I appreciate you sharing your experience. I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the antenna. Hopefully, it's a straightforward fix, and the estimate you shared gives me an idea of what to expect. Thank you!
