Mercedes G Klasse control unit communication error

My 2016 Mercedes G Klasse with a diesel engine is giving me some trouble. I've got a control unit communication error popping up. The engine's overheating, the check engine light is on, and I'm seeing coolant spills under the vehicle, which I'm guessing is from excessive pressure. The mileage is at 206891 km. Suspect a defective cable or plug connection.

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are experiencing with your Mercedes G Klasse. A control unit communication error can indeed lead to such symptoms. I had a similar experience with my previous vehicle, a BMW 5 series, where a faulty CAN bus connection caused intermittent overheating and diagnostic errors. Have you checked the data link connections to the control module for any signs of corrosion or damage? It might also be worthwhile to inspect the wiring harness for any obvious connectivity issues.

Thanks for the quick reply. When you say 'data link connections,' are there specific points I should be focusing on? And how obvious were the connectivity issues on your BMW? I'm not the most technically savvy person.

Certainly. On my BMW, the connectivity issues were not immediately obvious. I located the issue by carefully examining the wiring harness near the engine control module. The data link connections are the points where the wiring harness connects to the control module itself. Look for any loose connections or damaged pins within the plugs. Given the symptoms you described and the potential for a defective cable or plug connection, it might be prudent to consult a qualified technician. It sounds like it could escalate to a more severe problem. I was able to resolve my issue and I hope you can resolve your issue as well.

Appreciate the detailed explanation. Took it to the workshop. Turned out to be a wiring issue like you suspected, a defective plug connection. Repair cost was 95€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
