I haven't checked the cable and plug connections yet. Where exactly should I be looking? Is there a specific area I should focus on, or any particular components that are known to be problematic?

Focus your attention on the injector wiring harness, specifically the connectors at each injector and the main engine control unit (ECU). Given the diesel engine configuration, scrutinize connections near the fuel rail and high-pressure pump. Disconnect each connector individually, examine for corrosion or bent pins, and ensure a firm reconnection. Consider using a contact cleaner specifically formulated for electronic components. However, if you lack experience, I strongly recommend entrusting this task to a qualified technician. Attempting repairs without sufficient knowledge can exacerbate the problem. This should definitely be checked by a workshop as it is likely a cable or plug connection of the component is defective.

I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on! They found a loose connection on one of the injectors. They cleaned and secured the connection, and everything is back to normal. Cost me 95€ . Much appreciated!

The symptoms you describe for your Mercedes G Klasse indicate a potential issue within the injection system. The combination of elevated fuel consumption, diminished engine power, idle instability, and smoke during acceleration suggests a malfunction. While a leak could contribute, the symptoms are more aligned with a compromised electrical connection. I experienced similar issues with a 2016 BMW 5 series diesel, and it was due to a faulty injector plug. Have you inspected the cable and plug connections of the injection system components for any signs of corrosion, damage, or loose fittings?
