Mercedes G Klasse error codes

My 2003 Mercedes G Klasse with a gasoline engine is throwing codes. The malfunction indicator is on, and I am getting error messages on both the infotainment system and the speedometer. My diagnostic scanner points to a fault code, and I suspect it could be incorrect vehicle coding. Has anyone experienced this? Is this check engine light issue something I can easily address or is it control module related?

Sounds frustrating! Incorrect coding can definitely cause a cascade of issues. Have you recently had any work done on the vehicle's electrical system or any software performed? Also, what specific fault code is the diagnostic scanner reporting? That information would be very helpful in narrowing down the potential causes.

No recent work done, which is what is so perplexing. I do not have the exact code at hand, but is there a way to determine if it is a coding issue without a scan tool? Perhaps comparing the control module configuration with a known good one?

While comparing configurations sounds logical in theory, it's like trying to assemble a complex puzzle without knowing what the finished picture should look like. Without knowing the exact fault code from a diagnostic scanner, you're essentially working in the dark. I would advise a visit to a qualified workshop; they can pinpoint the incorrect coding and rectify it.

You were absolutely right. Took it to a workshop, and the diagnostic scanner confirmed the coding was off. They recoded the vehicle, and all the errors vanished. Cost me 360€, but well worth it for the peace of mind. Thanks for the advice!
