Mercedes GLA problems with misfiring for some time now
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Mercedes GLA owner reported issues including black smoke, check engine light, power loss, rough running, and stalling. The suspected cause was a defective ignition coil or misfiring. Another person shared a similar experience with a different Mercedes model, where the problem was a faulty engine control unit (ECU), which required replacement and reprogramming. Ultimately, the GLA's issue was traced to defective ignition coils, which were replaced along with the spark plugs, resolving the problems and restoring the car's performance.

Hey, thanks for your reply! That sounds like a serious problem with the control unit. Do you remember how much you paid for the replacement and reprogramming? And have there been any similar problems since then or is everything running smoothly again? Greetings and thanks again!

Hey, no problem, happy to help! In my case, the problem with the defective ignition coil or the misfiring was rectified immediately. Fortunately, that wasn't the main problem, but the engine control unit was faulty. In total, the repair of the engine control unit cost me around €1000, including replacement and reprogramming. Since the workshop visit, everything has been running perfectly again, no more complaints. The engine runs smoothly again, no black clouds of smoke, and the performance problems have also completely disappeared. Hope this helps you. Best wishes and good luck with your GLA!

Hey, in my case it was actually the ignition coil. I went straight to the garage as I wasn't sure whether I could fix it myself. The mechanic did a complete diagnosis and found that two ignition coils were defective. He replaced them and advised me to change the plugs at the same time. Fortunately, the costs were limited - I paid around €300 in total. The best thing about it: the GLA now runs like clockwork again! No more clouds of smoke, the engine runs more smoothly and the loss of power has also disappeared. I can only recommend that you go to the garage as soon as possible before it gets worse. Good luck and I hope your GLA is back in top shape soon! Best regards and thanks again for the tips!

My Mercedes B180 M270 gasoline engine is giving a misfire error. The coils and spark plugs have been replaced, and the engine malfunction light is coming on at high RPMs. The problem remains unresolved. What could be causing this? Any help would be appreciated.

Since you've already replaced the coils and spark plugs, the next step is to check the fuel injectors. A clogged or malfunctioning injector can cause misfires, especially at high RPMs. Consider having the injectors cleaned or tested for proper operation. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!

Hey, I had similar problems with my 2016 Mercedes C-Class. My symptoms were also very similar: black smoke, check engine light, loss of power and rough running. On investigation, it turned out that the engine control unit (ECU) was faulty. This was a pretty serious problem that could not simply be fixed with a small intervention. They had to replace and reprogram the ECU in the workshop. After that, my car ran as normal again and all the symptoms disappeared. It's best to have your control unit checked, it could be the same for you. Best wishes and good luck!
