Mercedes GLA radio reception problems

I'm having an issue with my 2019 Mercedes GLA, gasoline engine. The car only has 37097 km on it. Basically, the radio reception is terrible. I keep getting an error message on the infotainment system, and sometimes the audio just cuts out completely. The FM signal is just a mess of static noise. I had the error memory read, and it shows something about the antenna being defective. Could a defective antenna really be the issue? Has anyone had something similar happen with their car radio?

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Mercedes GLA is experiencing poor radio reception, with static noise and audio cutouts, accompanied by an error message indicating a defective antenna. The issue could be due to a faulty antenna, a malfunctioning signal amplifier, or a loose antenna wire. It is suggested to have a professional workshop diagnose and potentially replace the antenna to resolve the problem.

Sounds frustrating! I actually had a similar problem with my old Volvo, though it was a different brand, the symptoms were the same. Poor signal, lots of static noise. Did you check the signal amplifier? Sometimes those go bad. Is it possible the antenna wire came loose?

Signal amplifier? I hadn't thought about that. Where would I even find that on a GLA? And where would I check the antenna wire?

Honestly, finding the signal amplifier and tracing the antenna wire on a modern Mercedes can be a pain. My Volvo was much simpler. Given the error code and your description, it really does sound like a defective antenna. It is probably best to take it to a workshop and have them diagnose it properly. I ended up doing that with my Volvo.

You know what, you're probably right. I'll book it in for a checkup. The workshop already quoted me around 255€ for a new antenna, so that sounds like the likely cause. Thanks for the advice!
