Mercedes GLA transmission issue

My 2014 Mercedes GLA with a gasoline engine is showing some odd behavior. The engine warning light is on, and I'm getting a transmission warning light too. I pulled the error codes and it points to a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. I've noticed the gearbox seems to be in emergency mode, shifts are unclean, and sometimes I hear grinding. Could low gearbox oil be the culprit?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Mercedes GLA exhibited transmission issues, including warning lights and unclean shifts, with error codes indicating a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. The core problem was identified as low gearbox oil, which triggered the sensor fault and caused the gearbox to enter emergency mode. The solution involved topping off the gearbox oil and replacing the faulty sensor, resolving the issue.

I had a similar problem with my GLA – though I don't recall the exact code. Is the transmission sensor also called pressure gauge or oil sensor, maybe even pressure switch? Anyway, when the gearbox is in emergency mode it could be a transmission sensor issue. It is easy to diagnose, but you'd need to check the basics first. Could be the oil level, or the sensor itself.

When you say 'check the basics', are you referring to just the oil level? And when you say 'transmission sensor', are you referring to the transmission oil pressure sensor specifically? I want to make sure we're talking about the same thing before I start tearing things apart.

Yes, I was referring to the transmission oil pressure sensor, or pressure switch. By basics, I mean the oil level is the easiest to check. But honestly, with those symptoms, especially the grinding, you might want to have a workshop take a look. Could save you money in the long run. The pressure gauge itself is a cheap part, but you need to get to it first.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were right. The gearbox oil level was too low, causing the transmission sensor to trigger the fault. They topped it off and replaced the sensor, and it seems to have fixed the problem. Total cost was 365€. Appreciate the help.
