Mercedes GLC Hybrid Camshaft Sensor Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2016 Mercedes GLC hybrid with 107,707 km is experiencing rough starts, stalling, and a check engine light, with an OBD2 scanner indicating a camshaft sensor code. The issue may stem from a faulty camshaft sensor or an encoder wheel problem. Suggested solutions include checking sensor readings, inspecting the wiring harness for damage, and possibly replacing the encoder wheel. Ultimately, a workshop confirmed the encoder wheel was the issue, resolving the engine misfire and check engine light problems.

I logged the sensor readings, and the voltage seemed stable, but I'm not sure what the normal range should be. The code is P0340. I'll re-check the wiring. Is there a way to test the sensor itself without swapping it?

P0340 confirms the camshaft position sensor issue. Stable voltage doesn't mean the sensor is working; it could send incorrect timing information. Given the symptoms, code, and wiring check, the encoder wheel issue is probable. There are methods for in-depth sensor testing, but they need specialized equipment. Considering diagnostic time versus parts, you're best served by taking it to a workshop. They can confirm the cause and do the repairs.

Thanks for the advice. The workshop confirmed it was the encoder wheel on the camshaft. The total repair cost was 695€. At least the engine misfire and check engine light are gone now!

Camshaft sensor issues are common on these engines. The engine misfire and check engine light point that way, especially with the stalling. Did you log the sensor readings with the OBD2 scanner while the engine runs? A faulty sensor gives erratic readings, which helps confirm the diagnosis. What specific code are you getting? Knowing the code helps narrow things down. Intermittent faults can mimic a bad sensor, so check the wiring harness for chafing or damage.
