Mercedes GLE ABS Traction Control Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2022 Mercedes GLE diesel owner reported ABS and traction control issues, with the ABS lamp illuminating and diagnostics indicating a speed signal fault, suggesting a defective control unit with repair costs around 1000€. A similar case involved a faulty wheel speed sensor causing ABS failure and system errors, suggesting that incorrect sensor input could confuse the car's computer. It was advised to thoroughly inspect the wheel speed sensors before replacing the control unit, as sensor issues are common and can lead to cascading system errors.

Thanks, that's helpful. Did your issue also result in a complete ABS failure, and were there any error codes related to the control unit specifically?

Yes, the ABS failed completely, which was unnerving when braking. Initially, the error codes pointed to a general ABS malfunction. Further investigation showed the root cause was a faulty signal from one of the wheel speed sensors, which then cascaded into other system errors. The car's computer gets confused by the incorrect input and throws up warnings. I suggest having them thoroughly investigate the sensors before replacing the entire control unit. If it is the control unit, get it sorted at a workshop.

I appreciate the detailed explanation and advice. I will relay this information to the workshop and request a thorough inspection of the wheel speed sensors before replacing the control unit. It is reassuring to hear of a similar experience and a potential alternative solution. Thank you for your assistance.

I have a similar intermittent issue. Driving a GLE350de, could be dry and hot or cold and wet, every few months at random driving conditions (motorway or slow city roads) we get the following msgs on the screen, blind spot inoperative, active lane inoperative, abs and eps inoperative, cruise control and limiter inoperative. Switch car off for 2 min start again and all is clear, but the fault code is recorded. As “implausible right rear wheel speed signal received”. Mercedes garage replaced rear right wheel sensor, problem cleared then came back, they ran a cable from sensor to control unit, faults still appeared, so no issue with wiring. Recently the tyre pressure monitor on its own appeared with one tyre pressure low, took it straight into garage, no issue with tyre. Battery levels of 12v checked all good as is the alternator. Not checked fuses. Any help would be brilliant.

It sounds like you've already done a lot of troubleshooting. Since the wheel speed sensor and wiring have been addressed, consider checking the condition and cleanliness of the sensor's mounting area and the reluctor ring (tone ring) on the wheel hub. Dirt or damage here can cause intermittent signal issues. Also, ensure that all related connectors are clean and secure. If the problem persists, it might be worth having the control unit itself inspected for any internal faults. Keep me updated on your progress or if you have further questions!

Thank you for the suggestion. The reluctance ring has been replaced and also removed, on both occasions faults still came back. The cable has also now been tacked to ensure there is no movement. Could it be a faulty fuse causing the control unit to receive implausible msgs ? What exactly should we looking for with the control unit? Is the control unit just for the abs or does it also control the blind spot, cruise etc?

It's unlikely that a faulty fuse would cause intermittent implausible messages, but it's still worth checking all fuses related to the ABS and associated systems for any signs of damage or poor connections. The control unit for the ABS can indeed interact with other systems like blind spot monitoring and cruise control, as they often share data. If the issue persists, consider having the control unit tested for internal faults or software updates that might resolve communication errors. Let me know how it goes or if you have more questions!

I had a similar ABS light issue with my GLE, and the speedometer acted erratically. The odometer also seemed to freeze sometimes. It was a faulty wheel speed sensor. It's a common issue, especially if you drive a lot in wet conditions. Did they check the input from each wheel speed sensor to the ABS unit?
