Mercedes GLE power steering problem

I didn't write down the error code, unfortunately. The fluid level seems fine, so it's probably not that. You mentioned a defective cable or plug connection. How difficult is it to check those myself? I'm not a mechanic, but I can handle basic stuff.

Okay, no worries about the code. If the fluid is good, then we can rule that out. Checking those connections is a bit like finding a needle in a haystack, and it really depends on your comfort level. The steering system is quite complex, and you don't want to mess anything up. Given the error code and symptoms, and for your own safety, my recommendation is to get it checked by a workshop. A diagnostic would cost around 95€. It could be a simple fix, but it's better to be safe than sorry. The fact that the power steering sometimes fails is also a tell-tale sign.

Thanks for the advice! I appreciate the caution. Took it to the shop and you were spot on. Turns out it was a loose connection in the electric steering system. They charged me 95€ to fix it. Steering feels normal again.

Sounds like a bummer! A vibrating steering wheel and spongy handling aren't good signs, especially on a GLE. Since you have an error code, that's helpful. The error memory might indicate a problem with the steering system itself, possibly a defective cable or plug connection. It could be a faulty electric steering pump or even something related to the steering rack. Think of it like a loose wire on a lamp – sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Before anything, check the power steering fluid level (if applicable to your model, some electric steering systems don't use fluid). If it's low, that could be a cause. If not, it is more than likely a defective cable or plug connection, as indicated by the error code. Any idea what the error code number was?
