Mercedes GLK Diesel Engine Issues
Summary of the thread
A 2009 Mercedes GLK diesel engine is experiencing issues with the preheating lamp staying on, the check engine light being illuminated, and smoke emission during acceleration. A diagnostic test indicates a defective glow control unit, potentially caused by a faulty cable or plug. The problem was resolved by replacing a corroded connector on the glow control unit, which cleared the engine misfire and extinguished the engine light.

I had a look, but I'm no expert. Is there a specific way I should be checking the cable and plug connection? Like, what am I looking for exactly besides obvious corrosion?

Without proper tools, it's hard to say definitively. You might be able to spot broken wires, but sometimes it's internal. Given the engine light and smoke, it's probably best to get it to a workshop. They can run more detailed tests.

Thanks. I took your advice and went to a workshop. You were right. Turns out it was a corroded connector on the glow control unit. New connector and a bit of cleaning, total cost 95€. At least the engine misfire and engine light are gone!

Sounds plausible. A bad connection to the glow control unit could definitely cause those symptoms. Engine light, smoke, preheating issues... they all kinda fit. Have you checked the connections yourself? Maybe some corrosion?
