Mercedes GLS Diesel-Class 2015: Indicator light and engine problems - Possible camshaft sensor defect?

Unsteady engine

Engine shuts off by itself

Loss of engine power

Longer cold start time

Check engine light on

Car won't start

Hi guys, I'm worried about my 2015 Mercedes GLS diesel class with around 86878 km mileage. The engine is showing strange symptoms: the "Check Engine" light is on, the engine just stalls, long cold start time, loss of power, rough engine running and even starting problems. I am of the opinion that it could be due to a defective camshaft sensor. Have you had similar experiences or can you tell me how your mechanic solved such problems? What tips can you give me? I had a bad experience last time and am therefore a little unsure. I look forward to your help! Many thanks in advance.

Hi, I can very well understand your annoyance with your Mercedes GLS. I had a similar problem with my 2012 Mercedes E-Class. In my case, it was actually the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel sensor. The symptoms you describe also apply to my situation at the time: check engine light, engine problems, fluctuating performance, starting problems - everything. My engine seemed to have a mind of its own. The mechanic carried out a detailed diagnosis and ultimately both sensors had to be replaced. Basically not a huge job, but depending on where these parts are installed, it can be a delicate and time-consuming job. Nevertheless, it was definitely a serious problem that I had to fix urgently. It took a few days at the garage, but after that my Benz ran perfectly again. So my tip for you is to take it really seriously and take the car to a specialist garage for a thorough check. I generally don't wait long for problems like this, but deal with them immediately. Good luck and I hope that your problem can be solved quickly!

Hey, thanks for your feedback! It seems like our Mercedes have similar quirks. Your experience actually sounds a lot like my current situation. Your tip to take my car to a specialist garage for a thorough check also makes sense to me. If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much did it cost you to replace the sensors back then? And have there been any similar problems since then or has everything gone smoothly? Your experience is really valuable to me. Thanks again!

Hey, I'm glad to hear that my tip was helpful. After the mechanic got to work, there were really no more problems with the camshaft sensor, which has been working smoothly ever since. Of course, this was no cheap pleasure. The repair of the defective encoder wheel on the camshaft cost €695. But tell me, what won't you do for a smooth-running Benz, right? Since then, I really haven't had any more similar problems. It was really money well spent! The engine purrs like a kitten again and the whole mill just feels smoother. So don't be put off, it's worth it! I hope you get it over and done with quickly so that you can get back to riding again!

Hey, wow, thanks for the detailed reply. It's reassuring to know that you had the same problem and were able to solve it, even if it is of course annoying that repairs are so expensive. But you're right, for a good running Benz it's definitely worth the money. I'm going to follow your advice and take my car to a specialist garage. And with a bit of luck, my Mercedes will soon be purring like a kitten again and running reliably. Thanks again for your help and advice! Best regards.
