Mercedes GLS Diesel Intake Manifold Problem
Summary of the thread
A 2017 Mercedes GLS Diesel experienced intake manifold failure, leading to symptoms like strong exhaust fumes, rough idling, and engine stalling. The problem was suspected to be a vacuum leak caused by a defective intake manifold gasket. A workshop confirmed the intake manifold was leaking due to scorching, and after repair, engine performance returned to normal.

Yes, there is a strong exhaust smell, rough running and the engine even stalled at idle a couple of times. I suspect an intake manifold gasket leak, maybe scorching causing a vacuum leak. Are you suggesting that the intake manifold is the likely culprit here?

Sounds like the intake manifold is definitely the prime suspect. My issue was a leaking intake manifold too, which caused all sorts of engine performance problems. Given your symptoms and the error codes, I'd strongly advise getting it checked by a competent workshop. Continuing to drive it in that condition could potentially cause further damage. In my case, it was a cracked manifold leading to a significant air intake leak.

Thank you for confirming my suspicion. I appreciate the advice. I took it to the workshop and they confirmed the intake manifold was defective and leaking due to scorching. The repair cost me 1180€. Engine performance is back to normal now.

I had a similar issue with my GLS, though it wasn't a diesel. Symptoms sound eerily familiar. The jerking under acceleration and the check engine light were the first signs for me. Did you notice any strong exhaust fumes or a rough idle in addition to the reduced engine performance? Have you checked for any obvious vacuum leaks around the air intake?
