Mercedes GLS Hybrid Engine Light and Exhaust Smell
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Mercedes GLS Hybrid is experiencing a check engine light, rough engine performance, and an exhaust smell, suggesting a potential exhaust leak. A faulty lambda sensor is suspected as a possible cause of these issues. It is recommended to inspect the exhaust system, particularly around joints and welds, and consult a professional to confirm the diagnosis and address the problem.

No DEF fluid issues that I can see. Haven't checked the exhaust pipe closely though. Where exactly should I look for the exhaust leak?

It could be anywhere along the exhaust pipe, especially near the joints and welds. But honestly, with those symptoms it's probably more than just a simple exhaust leak. Lambda sensor could be the culprit, but a shop can confirm. Best to get it checked out.

Thanks, will take it to the shop. Sounds like it's more than I can handle. They said it was the lambda sensor, and some damage to the exhaust. Repair cost is 375€.

I have a GLS too. Similar thing happened to me. Engine light, rough running, and a strong exhaust smell. Any sign of DEF fluid issues or damage to the exhaust pipe? Check around the particulate filter too.
