Mercedes GT Roadster Engine Issues

It did come on gradually, I think. The reduced power was the first thing I noticed, then the light, and the rest followed pretty quickly. As for checking the vehicle emissions system, not a clue, I'm afraid. So, is it definitely the EGR valve then? Could it be anything else? And is it something I could try to fix myself, or am I looking at a hefty repair bill?

Okay, gradual onset makes the EGR valve even more likely. Look, without actually seeing the car, I can't say 'definitely', but all your symptoms scream EGR valve. It could potentially be something else in the recirculation system, but I'd bet money on the EGR. Honestly, unless you're pretty handy with tools and have a good code reader, I'd suggest taking it to a decent workshop. Messing with emissions stuff can be a pain, and you don't want to make it worse. Plus, a faulty EGR valve can cause other problems if left unchecked. Get it sorted before your emissions test.

You were spot on. I took it to a trusted mechanic, and it was indeed the EGR valve. The replacement plus labor came to 355€. Runs like a dream now. Thanks for the advice.

Sounds like you've got a party of problems under the hood there. The EGR valve definitely sounds like a prime suspect with those symptoms. Reduced power, rough running, smoke, hissing...yeah, that's all pointing that way. Has it been getting progressively worse, or did it just suddenly happen? Any idea when the last time the vehicle emissions system was checked?
