Mercedes M Klasse Audio System Issue

My 2014 Mercedes M Klasse with a gasoline engine has a non-functional audio system. The error memory points to a defective display. I suspect faulty wiring, dashboard controls, or the head unit. Could this cause speaker crackle or problems with the car speakers? The repair cost is around 725€.

Possible causes include faulty wiring, dashboard controls, or the head unit, which could also lead to speaker crackle. Sounds like a headache. I had a similar issue with my old Volvo, though the symptoms were slightly different. The entire infotainment system went haywire, not just the audio. It turned out to be a bad ground connection affecting the head unit. Think of it like a kink in a garden hose – the electricity can't flow properly. Have you checked the fuses related to the audio system and the main grounding points in the car? It is always good to start with the basics. Sometimes dashboard controls can fail, too.

Thank you for your reply. I appreciate the analogy, it is very helpful. When you mention checking the grounding points, could you elaborate a little more on where I might find those? Are they typically located near the head unit, or are they spread throughout the vehicle?

Grounding points are usually scattered around the car's chassis. Look under the dashboard, near the kick panels, and in the trunk area, often near the tail lights. They are typically wires bolted directly to the metal frame. Visual inspection for corrosion or looseness is key. If they look okay, it is probably best to leave it to a workshop. A faulty display can cause a lot of issues, and that price is probably right for the job.

I appreciate your help and advice. I'll take a look at the grounding points, but given the potential complexity, I'll likely bring it in to the workshop as you suggested. I brought the vehicle in for repairs and as it turned out, the display unit was indeed defective. After replacing it, the audio system now functions perfectly. Thank you again!
