Mercedes M Klasse engine issue

My Mercedes M Klasse from is having issues The car is a diesel with about 87112 km The check engine light is on and fuel consumption is up A mechanic suspects faulty inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly a camshaft solenoid valve defect or power supply issue He mentioned low power and engine misfire Could this be a VANOS solenoid issue like BMWs What could cause this and what should I do

Summary of the thread

A Mercedes M Klasse is experiencing engine issues, including an illuminated check engine light and increased fuel consumption. A mechanic suspects problems with the inlet VANOS mechanics, possibly due to a camshaft solenoid valve defect or power supply issue, leading to low power and engine misfire. The problem might be similar to VANOS solenoid issues seen in BMWs. It is suggested to conduct a thorough diagnostic check at a trusted workshop to confirm if the VANOS solenoid is the cause and proceed with necessary repairs.

Hey, I had something similar happen with my M Klasse Check engine light, guzzling fuel like crazy, the whole shebang Did they say anything about the VANOS solenoid specifically It could be that, or something else messing with the engine timing Is it running rough, like it wants to stall

Thanks for your reply The mechanic didn't explicitly mention the VANOS solenoid, but he said the issue was related to the inlet VANOS and the camshaft The engine runs relatively smoothly, but I definitely feel a slight decrease in power, especially when accelerating It's not stalling, thankfully Could it really be just the solenoid What did you end up doing to fix yours

Yeah, mine was acting pretty similar Slight power loss, but nothing crazy rough Honestly, I'm no mechanic I just took it straight to a workshop They ran some tests and replaced the VANOS solenoid That fixed it If it's the same for you, you might be looking at around 250€ for the repair Best to get it checked properly though, could be something else causing it

Thanks so much for sharing your experience It's reassuring to know someone else had a similar issue and resolved it I'll take your advice and schedule a thorough diagnostic check at a trusted workshop Hopefully, it's just the VANOS solenoid as well Appreciate your help
