Mercedes M Klasse Hybrid Mass Air Flow Meter Issue
Summary of the thread
The 2011 Mercedes M Klasse Hybrid experienced engine sputtering, increased fuel consumption, stalling at idle, and smoke during acceleration, with the check engine light on. These symptoms suggested a defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor, which is crucial for determining the correct air-fuel mixture. A faulty MAF sensor can lead to an improper mixture, causing the described issues. The recommended solution was to check the sensor readings with an OBD scanner and consult a mechanic, which confirmed the MAF sensor as the problem, leading to its replacement and resolution of the issues.

I am not too savvy What exactly am I looking for when checking the sensor readings with an OBD scanner How do I interpret the air-fuel mixture issue Can you give me a bit more detail

Essentially, you're looking for inconsistencies or values that are outside the normal range specified for your engine The scanner will give you live data from the MAF sensor Regarding the air-fuel ratio, the engine control unit ECU uses the MAF sensor data to calculate how much fuel to inject A bad sensor reports incorrect airflow, leading to an improper mixture – too rich too much fuel or too lean not enough fuel Based on your symptoms, and given that you are not a mechanic, I would recommend taking it to a trusted workshop

I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on It was indeed the mass air flow sensor The final repair cost came to 365€, but it was worth it to get my car running smoothly again I appreciate your help in diagnosing the problem

I had similar issues with my M Klasse Engine stalling and increased fuel consumption are classic symptoms The ECU relies heavily on the MAF sensor to determine the correct air intake When the sensor starts failing, it throws off the entire air-fuel mixture Did you check the sensor readings with an OBD scanner A faulty MAF sensor can definitely cause those problems
