Mercedes ML Diesel Engine Issue Resolved
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Mercedes ML diesel was experiencing reduced engine power, increased fuel consumption, stalling, and black smoke from the exhaust. The suspected cause was a faulty injection system or a possible air leak. Suggestions included checking the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor and inspecting cable connections. The issue was resolved by fixing a defective cable connection to a fuel injector, restoring engine performance and eliminating the smoke.

I am not very familiar with the MAF sensor. Could you please explain where I can find it and how I can check if it is working correctly? The smoke is black, by the way. The engine power loss is quite significant, and the increased diesel consumption is becoming a real burden. Could a simple cable or plug connection issue really cause all of these problems, as I have read?

Okay, with black smoke, it does sound like too much fuel is being injected. The MAF sensor is usually located in the air intake duct, between the air filter box and the engine. You can try cleaning it with a specific MAF sensor cleaner, but be very gentle. As for the cable or plug connection, yes, a defective connection can definitely cause these issues. A loose or corroded connection can disrupt the signal from a sensor, leading to incorrect fuel injection. However, based on your description, it might be best to take it to a workshop to have it properly diagnosed. They have the tools to read error codes and pinpoint the problem.

I appreciate your advice. I took the car to a workshop, and you were spot on! It turned out to be a defective cable connection to one of the fuel injectors. They fixed the connection for 95€, and now the engine runs smoothly again. The engine power is back, no more stalling, and the smoke is gone. Thank you very much for your help!

I had a similar issue with my old Opel Corsa, though it wasn't a diesel. Reduced engine power and stalling can often be caused by a problem with the air intake. Have you checked the Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor? It measures the amount of air entering the engine. If it's dirty or faulty, it can cause these symptoms. Also, regarding the smoke, what color is it? Black smoke usually indicates too much fuel, while blue smoke can indicate burning oil. A diesel leak could also be a factor.
