Mercedes ML Electronic Parking Brake Problem

My 2012 Mercedes ML with a gasoline engine is having electronic parking brake issues. It has only 9554 km on it, but the electronic handbrake is not working. An error is logged and the warning light is on. My diagnostics suggest a bad electric motor in the brake caliper. The repair is quoted at 505€. Has anyone else dealt with this brake failure? I've checked the basics, but I think it's more than a brake sensor issue. Any brake diagnostics advice would be appreciated

Sounds familiar. I had a similar electronic brake problem on my ML. The electric motor in the caliper is a likely culprit, it is integrated into the brake control unit. Did you check the wiring harness and connections to the caliper? Sometimes a corroded connector can cause these intermittent electronic issues and trigger that error

Good point about the wiring. I did a quick visual check, but didn't use a multimeter. When you had the issue, did you get any specific error codes from the brake control module? Was the error consistent, or intermittent like a loose connection could cause

Mine was consistently throwing the error, pointing directly to the caliper motor. Intermittent issues are a pain to track down. Given the consistent error and your initial diagnosis, I'd say the motor is likely the problem. To be safe, I suggest visiting a workshop to confirm. They can perform more thorough brake diagnostics

Thanks for the insight. It was exactly as suspected – electric motor in the caliper was broken. I replaced it, cleared the codes, and everything is fine. Your confirmation helped me decide to do the repair. Thanks again
