Mercedes ML Faulty Gear Indicator

My 2008 Mercedes ML with a gasoline engine is showing a faulty gear indicator. I am unable to engage the gears, the automatic transmission shifting is implausible, and the gearbox slips plus shifts uncleanly. Furthermore, I noticed grinding noises when shifting gears, and an error is stored in the memory. Also, the gear selection display in the car dashboard isn't working. Mileage is currently at 138129 km. Suspect a defective control unit. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have a similar Mercedes ML, and I experienced similar issues with the gear indicator. The electronic display was erratic, and the shift knob felt unresponsive at times. Did you notice any sensor problems prior to the complete failure of the gear selection display in the speedometer?

When you say 'erratic', can you give me more specifics? Were there any other symptoms besides the shift knob feeling unresponsive, and what, if anything, did your error codes point to?

Certainly. By 'erratic', I mean the gear indicator on the car dashboard would flicker or display incorrect gear positions. This was often accompanied by a delay in gear engagement, and occasionally, the transmission would slip. Given the potential cost, I would suggest taking your vehicle to a trusted workshop for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment.

Thanks for the insight. Sounds like we had the same issue. Ended up being the control unit as suspected. Repair set me back 1000€. Hopefully this info can assist others in the future.
