Mercedes ML Hybrid Engine Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2011 Mercedes ML hybrid is experiencing engine overheating, a check engine light, and coolant escaping, suspected to be due to excessive cooling system pressure. An OBD scanner shows a control unit communication error, possibly caused by a defective cable or plug connection. After checking fuses and clearing codes, the issue persists, leading to the suspicion of a CAN bus problem. A mechanic later confirms the problem as a corroded connector on the hybrid control module, which was resolved by cleaning and re-pinning the connector.

Good call on the fuses I checked those already Regarding clearing the codes, yes, I did The check engine light returns after a short drive How deep do I need to dive into the wiring harness before giving up I'm thinking about probing the CAN bus wires Any guidance on where to find a wiring diagram or specific points to test

Since the code reappears, it points to a real issue CAN bus problems can be tricky If you're not comfortable probing wires and interpreting signals, it might be best to take it to a shop with experience in Mercedes hybrids They have the specialized tools to pinpoint the problem It could save you time and headaches This may be out of your reach without the proper diagnostic equipment

I appreciate the honesty You're right, sometimes you have to know when to fold 'em I took it to a trusted mechanic, and they confirmed it was a corroded connector on the hybrid control module Water had seeped in and caused havoc They cleaned and re-pinned the connector With labor, it came to about 95€ Thanks for steering me in the right direction

Sounds like your ML is having a bad day A communication error can be a pain to track down Did you clear the codes and see if they return Sometimes a blip can trigger a code If it comes back, check all the fuses related to the engine control module and cooling system A blown fuse can cause weird issues
