Mercedes ML Hybrid Transmission Issues Resolved

My 2010 Mercedes ML hybrid is acting up The main issue is with the automatic transmission it seems stuck in park The engine wont even start, and the check engine light is on The gearbox feels like it's slipping when it rarely moves I scanned it, and there's an error stored I'm suspecting a shift lock or something wrong with the gear shifter or some kind of transmission failure Could it be a dodgy transmission sensor or the gear linkage Any ideas before I get reamed by the dealer I've heard these can be expensive

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Mercedes ML hybrid was experiencing transmission issues, including being stuck in park, engine start failure, and a check engine light. The suspected causes included a shift lock, gear shifter problem, or transmission failure, possibly due to a faulty transmission sensor or gear linkage. The solution involved diagnosing and replacing a defective transmission control unit (TCU), which resolved the issues and restored the vehicle's functionality.

Sounds like a potential control unit issue Have you checked the transmission sensor connections and wiring harness for any obvious damage or corrosion A defective control unit can definitely cause these symptoms, including shift lock and the error code If the wiring is okay, it likely is the control unit If it is, a proper diagnostic at a workshop is recommended They can confirm the fault and potentially reprogram or replace the unit

Thanks for the quick reply When you say 'control unit', are we talking about the main ECU or something specific to the transmission itself Also, is there any way to test the transmission sensor myself with a multimeter or something, or am I just asking for trouble

I'm referring to the transmission control unit (TCU) While the main ECU manages the engine, the TCU handles the transmission's functions Regarding testing the sensor, you could, but you would need the correct wiring diagram and acceptable resistance values Due to the complexity of a hybrid transmission and the potential for further damage, I'd still recommend a workshop visit It aligns with the likely cause you mentioned A faulty TCU causing a defective parking position is a common issue

Okay, appreciate the advice Bit the bullet and took it to a specialist Turns out you were spot on the TCU was indeed fried They replaced it and reprogrammed everything Cost me around 1000€, which is what I expected, but at least it's running smoothly again Thanks for pointing me in the right direction
