Mercedes R Klasse Diesel Engine Problems
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Mercedes R Klasse diesel with 240,028 km was experiencing power loss, excessive smoke, rough engine performance, high fuel consumption, jerking, and a loud hissing noise. The issues were suspected to be related to the EGR valve or potential vacuum leaks. After consulting a mechanic, it was confirmed that the EGR valve was faulty. Replacing the valve resolved the problems, restoring the car's performance and eliminating the smoke and hissing noise.

Thanks for the reply Vacuum leaks I hadn't really thought about that Where exactly should I be looking for these leaks And how would I check the catalytic converter without taking the whole exhaust system apart As for the rough idle yes it's definitely idling rough especially when cold

I am no expert but given the rough idle the smoke and the hissing it really does sound like the EGR valve I would go to a workshop They can properly diagnose the vacuum lines If the valve is jammed open or closed it will cause havoc As for the catalytic converter I am not sure how to check this myself

Thanks I appreciate the help Took it to a mechanic and you were spot on – EGR valve was completely shot New valve fitted total cost 355€ and the car is running like a dream again No more smoke power is back and the hissing has gone Cheers

I had a similar issue with my R Klasse diesel Symptoms sound awfully familiar The hissing is interesting I'd definitely suspect the EGR valve as a starting point but have you considered checking for vacuum leaks in the hoses connected to the EGR system Sometimes a split hose can cause similar issues Also has the catalytic converter ever been checked A blocked catalytic converter can mimic EGR problems Does it idle rough
