Mercedes R Klasse Engine Stalling At Idle

My 2011 Mercedes R Klasse with a gasoline engine is giving me headaches. The check engine light is on, and the error memory points to a bad idle air control valve. The engine's stalling at idle, which is super annoying. I'm suspecting a contaminated air intake. Has anyone else run into this?

I had a similar issue with my old Volvo (different engine, of course!) but the symptoms sound eerily familiar. Engine stalling sounds like a real pain. Has the garage mentioned anything about the throttle body? Heavily contaminated air intake may be causing issues there too. What's the mileage on your Mercedes?

Mileage is around 145132 km. The garage mentioned something about the air intake needing cleaning, but didn't go into detail about the throttle body specifically. You think that could be the culprit? What exactly was the problem with your Volvo?

Okay, 145k km is considerable. With my Volvo, the issue ended up being excessive carbon buildup on the throttle body, caused by oil vapors getting sucked in through the air intake. Cleaning it helped temporarily, but eventually, I had to replace the throttle body and address the root cause of the oil contamination. Given your engine stalling and the error code, it's worth getting a professional to inspect the entire air intake system, including that throttle body. If you are not up for repair, consider going to the workshop, as the repair might be too complicated for you.

Thanks for the insight! Turns out the air intake was heavily contaminated. Had the throttle body cleaned and the air intake system professionally cleaned. Cost me about 425€, but the engine's running smoothly now. Appreciate the advice!
