Really? A faulty plug? Where exactly was it located? I'm not great with cars, but I'm willing to have a look myself before taking it to a shop. Is it easy to spot, or hidden away somewhere?

It was a while ago so I can't recall exactly, but it was definitely related to the injection system. Honestly, if you're not that familiar, I'd get it checked out by someone who knows what they're doing. Could save you a lot of hassle in the long run. Don't want to mess up the petrol or fuel lines.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a local workshop, and you were spot on – it was a defective connection in the injection system. They replaced the cable and plug for 95€ and now it seems to be running like new again. Performance is back, and no more smoke. Really appreciate the help.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my S Klasse, although a while back now. Reduced performance and extra fuel usage were the first signs. Did you check for any obvious things like loose wires or dodgy connections around the fuel injection system? That was my issue, turned out to be a faulty plug.
