Mercedes S Klasse engine issue
Summary of the thread
The conversation revolves around a 2009 Mercedes S Klasse experiencing engine issues, including a check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption. The initial concern was a potential problem with the crankshaft to camshaft reference value, possibly due to a defective crank sensor or a timing chain issue. Suggestions included checking both the crank and camshaft position sensors and considering the timing chain's condition. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a defective crank sensor, which was replaced by a mechanic.

Thank you for your prompt response. I appreciate the suggestion to also investigate the camshaft position sensor. To answer your question, yes, there have been occasional misfires noted. I have not had the timing chain inspected recently; is this a complex and costly procedure? Could the timing chain being worn cause the crank sensor to report the incorrect value?

Worn timing chains can stretch and cause timing issues, potentially triggering those sensor errors and misfires, but it is less likely with such a low mileage. Given all the symptoms, it might be best to have a qualified mechanic perform a thorough diagnosis. The crank sensor remains a likely culprit but it is difficult to be certain without proper tools.

I appreciate your insights and agree that a professional diagnosis is warranted. I have scheduled an appointment with a trusted mechanic. As it turns out, the crank sensor was indeed defective. The total repair cost, including parts and labor, amounted to 340€. Thank you again for your assistance.

It sounds like a crank sensor issue could be the problem, given the symptoms. Has there been any misfire reported? It might also be worth investigating the camshaft position sensor as well since it works in conjunction with the crank sensor. When was the last time the timing chain was inspected?
