A faulty clutch switch, you say? Those symptoms do sound familiar. I drive an SL myself. Before throwing parts at it, have you checked the basics? Is the car throwing any specific fault codes? An electrical fault could be a loose connection, a corroded ground, or even a failing control module. Are you sure it's just the clutch switch and not something interfering with the gear selector or impacting the starting circuit? Because all those systems are interconnected, aren't they?

Good point about the interconnected systems. I was focusing on the clutch switch because that's what the error code pointed to. But you're right, could be something else causing it. You mentioned checking fault codes – besides the clutch switch one, are there other specific codes I should be looking for that might indicate a different underlying issue?

Ah, so there's a code specifically pointing to the clutch switch. In that case, yes, it very well could be the culprit. However, and this is crucial, before replacing it, thoroughly inspect the wiring and connector to that switch. I've seen corrosion and even chafed wires cause intermittent issues that mimic a faulty switch. Is the connection secured properly? Any signs of damage? If the wiring checks out and the code persists, then yes, replacing the switch is the logical next step. Otherwise, time at the workshop will be required.

Thanks for the advice! Turns out it was exactly what you suspected: a faulty clutch switch due to a bad plug connection. Cleaned it up, secured it properly, and everything's back to normal. Saved me from needlessly replacing the whole switch!
