Mercedes SL Power Steering Problem

Experiencing power steering issues on my 2008 Mercedes SL with a gasoline engine. Mileage is at 189098 km. The steering wheel is vibrating and shaking, handling feels spongy, and the error memory has logged a fault. It's requiring significantly increased effort to steer, almost like the power steering has given up entirely. I suspect a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone encountered similar problems with their steering system, potentially related to the electric steering or steering rack? Any advice before I start probing around the pressure hose?

The symptoms you describe are indicative of a power steering malfunction. The vibration and increased steering effort suggest a potential issue with the electric power steering assist motor or its associated control module. Have you checked the fluid level in the power steering reservoir? While your suspicion of a cable or plug connection issue is valid, it is also prudent to examine the condition of the steering rack itself for any signs of damage or leakage. Could you please provide the exact error code stored in the vehicle's memory? This information would be helpful in narrowing down the possible causes.

Thanks for the reply. I did check the reservoir, and fluid levels are fine. I don't have the exact error code on hand currently, but I am curious about your mention of the electric power steering assist motor. Where is that located on this model, and is there a relatively easy way to test it before I start chasing down wiring?

Based on your description and the age of your vehicle, it is advisable to have a qualified technician diagnose the issue further. While you can attempt to visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the electric power steering assist motor, proper diagnosis often requires specialized equipment and expertise. Given the potential for further damage to the steering system, a visit to a reputable workshop is recommended to ensure a safe and accurate repair.

Appreciate the advice. Took it to a local shop, and you were spot on - turned out to be a corroded connector on the electric power steering motor. Cleaned and replaced it. Total cost was 95€ . Steering is back to normal. Thanks!
