Mercedes SL Tailgate Problem

That's interesting! So, sensor wiring issues, you say? Can you recall any more details about how you resolved the problem? Did you replace the entire wiring harness, or was it a simple matter of tightening a loose connection? I'm reasonably adept with tools, so if it's not too intricate, I might be able to tackle it myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Okay, so I just dug through my service records. Yes, it was definitely the hall sensor, like you said. And yes, it was the sensor wiring. Honestly, I didn't touch it myself. I'm not comfortable messing with electronics like that. I took it straight to a workshop. It was quicker and less stressful for me. I'm really not sure what the mechanic did exactly. Maybe they just re-seated the connections, or maybe they replaced a section of the wiring. But I'm guessing it's best to get it checked out by a professional.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's reassuring to know that someone else has encountered a similar problem. Given your experience, I think I'll play it safe and take it to a workshop. It's probably wise to avoid causing any further damage by attempting a repair beyond my skill level. At least I have a better understanding of the issue now, and I can discuss it more knowledgably with the mechanic. Thanks again!

I think I had something similar happen with my SL. The open tailgate function acted a bit wonky, like it wasn't getting a good signal sometimes. It was the sensor wiring. You mentioned a hall sensor fault, and I remember the paperwork saying something like that. I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to cars, so could you explain a bit about hall sensors? What do they actually do?
