Mercedes SL VANOS Issue Resolved

My 2019 Mercedes SL with a gasoline engine has a check engine light and drinks fuel. It has 148213 km on it. I suspect the inlet VANOS mechanics are faulty, with low power and occasional misfires. I checked for oil sludge, but it's clean. It reminds me of BMW VANOS issues. Maybe a bad camshaft solenoid valve or a power supply problem? Has anyone encountered this?

I had a similar issue with my SL, but I didn't check the oil sludge. The symptoms sound the same: check engine light, high fuel consumption, and low power. Did you check the variable timing?

I did a quick timing check, but nothing thorough. What did you find when you checked yours? Was it consistently off, or intermittent? Were there any specific codes?

The timing was off, and the codes pointed to the VANOS system. I recommend a proper diagnosis. For me, it was a faulty solenoid valve. Take it to a workshop.

Thanks for the insight. My mechanic confirmed it was a faulty solenoid valve on the VANOS. The repair was 250€ and it runs great now!
