Mercedes SLC Belt Handover Issue

I'm writing to ask about a potential issue with my 2019 Mercedes SLC, gasoline engine, which currently has 290392 km. The belt-handover no longer functions, and I suspect a defective belt bringer/handover itself. Is this a common problem? I also hear belt squeal sometimes. I am worried about the belt drive and even the timing belt.

Summary of the thread

The conversation revolves around a 2019 Mercedes SLC with a malfunctioning belt-handover and occasional belt squeal. The initial suspicion was a defective belt bringer/handover, but further discussion suggested the belt tensioner might be the root cause. The tensioner was identified as faulty, leading to the belt squeal and handover issues. The recommended solution was to inspect and replace the belt tensioner, which was confirmed as the problem and subsequently repaired.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar issue with my SLC. The belt squeal was driving me nuts. It turned out to be the belt tensioner. The serpentine belt wasn't getting the right tension, causing the squeal and eventually messing with the handover. Did you check the tensioner itself? Is it moving freely, or does it seem stuck? I’d look at that before assuming it’s the belt bringer/handover.

Thank you for your response. How would I check the belt tensioner specifically? Is there a visual indicator of failure, or is it more subtle? Also, how urgent is this, do you think? I have to drive quite a bit in the coming weeks.

Well, on mine, the tensioner arm was visibly bouncing around more than it should. It should have smooth movement. If it is jerking or vibrating a lot, that’s a bad sign. Also, inspect the belt tensioner for cracks or leaks. Regarding urgency, a failing belt tensioner can lead to the serpentine belt coming off completely. That could damage other components in the belt drive and potentially cause serious engine damage. I would advise getting it checked by a workshop soon.

I appreciate your advice. I took your suggestion and brought the vehicle to a trusted workshop. You were correct: the belt tensioner was indeed the problem. The total repair cost was 455€. Thank you again for your assistance.
