When you say thermostat, do you mean the map controlled thermostat? The engine is definitely overheating, I can smell it, and the gauge is way up I haven't noticed any puddles, so I'm not sure if there's a coolant leak, but the coolant level does seem a bit low I'm not hearing any strange noises from the water pump How much did the thermostat repair cost you on your Volvo? Trying to brace myself

Yes, I did mean the map controlled thermostat If your engine is definitely overheating, and the coolant level is low, even if you don't see a major coolant leak, that points to a problem in the cooling system A small coolant leak can evaporate before it hits the ground Given all the symptoms, it really does sound like the thermostat is the most likely culprit I ended up taking my Volvo to a workshop It's the safest thing to do, unless you are absolutely sure of what you are doing I would suggest getting it checked by a professional; they can pressure test the system to find any leaks and properly diagnose the thermostat I think it might cost you around 350€.

I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on it was the thermostat He replaced it, topped up the coolant, and now everything seems to be running perfectly He said that it's pretty common on the Mercedes SLC I really appreciate you sharing your experience; it saved me a lot of stress and probably some money by helping me narrow down the problem Now I can enjoy my car again

Engine overheating is never good I had a similar problem with my old Volvo In my case, it was the thermostat If the thermostat is stuck open, the engine will take forever to warm up, and if it's stuck closed, it can cause overheating Have you checked the coolant level in the reservoir? A low coolant level could definitely lead to overheating As for the water pump, that's possible, but usually, you'll hear a noise if it's failing Is the engine actually overheating, or is it just the gauge showing high? Are you losing coolant?
