Mercedes Sprinter heavy steering and vibration issue
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Mercedes Sprinter experienced heavy steering and significant vibration, particularly at lower speeds. The issue was linked to a defective steering angle sensor, which affected the power steering system's functionality. The problem was confirmed by a mechanic, who suggested that faulty coding of the sensor might be the cause. After recoding the sensor at a different shop, the steering returned to normal, resolving the issue.

Warning lights? Yeah, the ABS light is on and the stability control light flickers sometimes. So, you're saying it's definitely the steering sensor then? Is it a big job to fix? The mechanic mentioned something about steering column alignment. Is that related? And is it expensive? Just trying to figure out if I'm getting ripped off here.

The ABS and stability control lights strongly suggest the steering angle sensor is the culprit. The alignment issue arises because the sensor needs to be calibrated after replacement to ensure it correctly detects the steering wheel's position. It's not necessarily a huge mechanical job, but requires specialized diagnostic equipment to properly code the new sensor to your vehicle. I recommend taking your vehicle to a reputable workshop with experience in Mercedes vehicles. They will be able to confirm the diagnosis and provide an accurate quote for the repair.

Thanks for the info! I took it to a different shop, and they confirmed it was indeed the steering angle sensor. They recoded it, and the steering is back to normal. Cost me 195€. Appreciate the help!

I understand your frustration. A similar issue occurred with my 2014 Volvo XC60. The symptoms you describe are consistent with a failing steering angle sensor. The steering column relies on this sensor to provide accurate information to the power steering system. If the sensor provides incorrect data, the power steering may not function correctly, leading to increased steering effort and vibrations. Think of it like a GPS giving the wrong directions to your car's steering system. Do you notice any warning lights on the dashboard related to the ABS or stability control?
