Mercedes V Klasse Generator Problems

My 2011 Mercedes V Klasse with a gasoline engine is having issues The generator seems to have failed I'm experiencing reduced engine power, a warning light, and starting problems The lights are also weak A diagnostic tool showed an error suggesting a faulty generator Could this be my alternator What am I looking at in terms of replacement I was quoted 960€ Could this affect the starter motor or charging system

Sounds like the alternator is the prime suspect given the symptoms and the error code Reduced power, warning lights, and starting issues are all classic signs Flickering lights are another telltale sign the charging system isn't working correctly The alternator's job is to charge the battery while the engine is running When it fails, the battery drains Has the battery itself been tested Sometimes a weak battery can mask alternator issues, or vice versa

Thanks You mentioned testing the battery How exactly would I do that I'm not exactly a mechanic, so keep it simple Also, if it is the alternator, is alternator replacement something a moderately skilled DIYer could tackle, or am I better off leaving it to the professionals Is there any risk of damage to the starter motor from repeatedly trying to start the car with a potentially faulty charging system

While there are ways to test a battery with a multimeter, it's best to have it load tested at a shop They have equipment for accurate results Regarding alternator replacement, it varies by vehicle Some are straightforward, others require removing other components Given the potential for electrical issues and the cost of a mistake, professional alternator replacement is usually the safer bet Repeatedly trying to start the car with a low battery puts extra strain on the starter motor, potentially shortening its lifespan, but that's usually a secondary concern compared to fixing the charging system

Okay, I understand I appreciate your advice It sounds like this is a job best left to the experts I'll get the battery tested properly and then take it in for an alternator replacement I can confirm the repair shop confirmed it was indeed the generator The alternator replacement including labor cost 960€, just as suspected Hopefully, this will resolve the issues Thanks again
