Mercedes Viano active air flap issue
Summary of the thread
A 2012 Mercedes Viano with a check engine light and overheating issues was diagnosed with an active air flap fault. The problem likely stemmed from a malfunctioning flap motor, which could restrict airflow to the radiator if stuck closed, leading to overheating. It was advised to have the vehicle inspected by a workshop to avoid potential engine damage. The workshop confirmed the flap motor failure, replaced the active air flap assembly, and resolved the overheating issue.

The diagnostic scan just said 'active air flap fault' It didn't specify if it was stuck open or closed. Is there an easy way to check this myself, without taking half the van apart? Where exactly is this flap located? And if it is stuck closed, could I manually open it somehow, as a temporary fix?

Without knowing if the flap is open or closed, proceeding is risky. Manually forcing it open might work temporarily, but could also damage the system further. It's situated within the air intake system, usually behind the front grille. Given the potential for engine damage and the lack of specific diagnostic information, I advise taking it to a workshop. They can pinpoint the exact issue with the active air flap and advise on the best course of action.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I took it to the workshop, and you were right. The flap motor was completely kaput. They replaced the whole active air flap assembly, and the overheating issue is now sorted. Cost me 590€, but at least I have peace of mind now.

Active air flap problems on the Viano/Vito can cause overheating. The flap motor might be the culprit. If the flap is stuck closed, it restricts airflow to the radiator. The engine management system might trigger the check engine light to warn about potential engine damage from overheating. Does the diagnostic scan specify whether the flap is stuck open or closed?
