Mercedes Viano diesel engine problem

My 2002 Mercedes Viano diesel has increased fuel consumption and reduced engine power What could be the issue

That sounds rough I had something similar happen with my old Renault, though it was a petrol engine Check engine light, the whole shebang For me, it turned out to be a dodgy sensor messing with the fuel mixture Could be worth a look before you start tearing into the timing belt or anything major Those sensors can cause all sorts of weird issues and throw off the cylinder pressure readings Intake manifold is a good shout too, especially if it's gunked up Did your mechanic check for any error codes

A 'dodgy sensor', you say Interesting Could you perhaps elaborate on which sensor you are referring to And where I might find this sensor to check it Is it near the camshaft or crankshaft I am not very technical, so please explain it as you would to your grandma It is true that he mentioned something about error codes, but I was too worried to remember the details

Yeah, I'm no expert, so don't quote me It was a while ago, but I think it was the mass airflow sensor (MAF) Basically, it tells the car's computer how much air is going into the engine If it's giving wrong info, the engine gets the wrong amount of fuel, and that can cause all sorts of problems like cylinder pressure fluctuation A mechanic should be able to test it pretty easily Honestly, it's probably best to let them handle it It's usually on the intake manifold, near the air filter box My Renault ended up costing me almost nothing as it was an easy fix Best of luck

I extend my sincerest gratitude for your illuminating insights I heeded your advice and entrusted my vehicle to the capable hands of a seasoned mechanic As it turns out, the issue was indeed traced back to a faulty sensor, as you astutely suggested The sensor in question was promptly replaced, and the engine now purrs like a kitten, with fuel consumption returning to its normal levels and the check engine light now dark The final repair cost was 0€, covered by my insurance Your assistance has been invaluable, and I am forever in your debt
