Mercedes Viano: indicator light, reduced engine output and DPF regeneration - possible defect in the exhaust gas temperature sensor

Hey guys, my Mercedes Viano (petrol version, year of manufacture 2015, mileage 78124 km) is causing me concern. The indicator light is on, the engine performance has deteriorated, no success with DPF regeneration and the exhaust smells pretty strong. I suspect that the exhaust temperature sensor has given up the ghost. Has anyone experienced similar problems and could perhaps report on their experience with the workshop? Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky last time. Looking forward to your feedback, thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

The Mercedes Viano is experiencing issues such as an illuminated indicator light, reduced engine performance, unsuccessful DPF regeneration, and a strong exhaust smell. The suspected cause is a potential defect in the exhaust gas temperature sensor. A similar case was shared where the exhaust system was leaking, leading to the replacement of the exhaust manifold, system, and temperature sensor. It was suggested to check the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion before replacing any parts, and to consult a professional mechanic if necessary.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Mercedes Vito (diesel, year of manufacture 2012, mileage 68000 km). The symptoms sound very similar. In my case, the exhaust system was leaking badly, which caused the indicator light and the strong smell. The workshop had to replace the exhaust manifold and the exhaust system, and the exhaust temperature sensor was also replaced. It was a pretty serious problem that needed to be fixed for sure. Hopefully this info helps you a bit. Good luck!

Hey, thanks for the info! That sounds really similar to my problem. Do you remember how much it cost you to get it all fixed? And has anything else caused problems with the car since then?

Hey, of course I can still remember. The whole exhaust system repair cost me €265. But it was really necessary, the exhaust system was leaking really badly. Since then the car has been running smoothly again, no further problems. And yeah, you were right with your suspicion about the exhaust temperature sensor. It did have to be replaced, but since the mechanic got to it, everything has been fine. Hope that helps you!

Hey, thanks for the detailed information! That reassures me a lot. 265 € actually sounds feasible and it's good to know that your car hasn't had any problems since then. I think I'll make an appointment at the garage soon and hopefully they'll have a solution for my problem. Thanks again for your help!

Hello, I have an A-Class, A200, year 2019. There is an error Po 54626, the error is only displayed when interpreting in diagnosis. It says that there is a problem with the temperature of the exhaust gas, (Zilinderbank 1) short circuit to plus ligt. On the Kremer there are two temperature fillers, one above and one below, which one could it be? Or are there other temperature fillers?

It sounds like you're dealing with an exhaust gas temperature sensor issue. The error code you provided doesn't seem to be standard, but if it's related to the exhaust gas temperature sensor, it could be either sensor 1 or sensor 2. Sensor 1 is usually located before the catalytic converter and sensor 2 is located after. However, before replacing any parts, I would recommend checking the wiring and connectors for any signs of damage or corrosion. A short circuit to plus light usually indicates a wiring issue. If you're not comfortable doing this yourself, I would recommend taking your car to a professional mechanic. This is a safety-relevant issue and should be addressed promptly. Please let us know how you get on or if you have any further questions.
