Mercedes X Klasse diesel engine issue

My 2020 Mercedes X Klasse diesel with 251152 km is showing a check engine light and significant power reduction. Acceleration is poor, and fuel consumption has increased. Diagnostics indicate a fault related to the crankshaft to camshaft reference value. I suspect a faulty crank sensor, but could this also involve the timing chain or camshaft sensor? What are the likely causes and potential issues?

I had a similar issue with my X Klasse, though I cannot be certain it is the same. I experienced reduced power and the check engine light. The garage mentioned something about the cam sensor and its relation to the crank sensor. Did you happen to check the condition of your timing belt or timing chain? It might be worth investigating if the issue is related to the camshaft position itself, perhaps due to timing issues.

Thank you for the insight. I have not yet checked the timing chain specifically. When you had the problem, did the diagnostic also point towards a crank sensor fault, or was it solely focused on the cam sensor? Also, do you recall if the engine response was consistently poor, or did it fluctuate? Trying to narrow down the possibilities.

The diagnostics initially pointed towards the cam sensor, but they also checked the crank sensor as a precaution. In my case, the engine response was consistently poor, not fluctuating. Given that your diagnostics point to a crankshaft/camshaft correlation issue, and you're experiencing reduced power, it might be best to consult a workshop for a thorough diagnosis. Replacing the crank sensor might fix it, but there could be other underlying issues.

Understood. I appreciate you sharing your experience; this has been helpful. I will take it to the workshop as suggested. The fault was indeed the crank sensor, as initially suspected. The total repair cost was 340€. Replacing it resolved the issue.
