Mercedes X Klasse Diesel Transfer Case Issue

My 2017 Mercedes X Klasse with a diesel engine has a possible transfer case oil wear issue at 295018 km. I'm experiencing gearbox slippage and unclean shifting. Could this be defective transfer case gears? I'm expecting a repair cost of 330€.

I also own a diesel X Klasse and had similar issues, including gear grinding noises. Have you checked the transfer fluid level recently? Low oil can cause those symptoms. An oil change might help, but if there is excessive oil wear, it may not be enough.

Thanks for the advice. I will inspect the transfer fluid level. Can you describe the gear grinding noises you heard? When did you notice them, like during specific gear changes or at certain speeds?

The gear grinding was intermittent, but most noticeable during low-speed maneuvers and when shifting between lower gears. With your mileage and symptoms, get a mechanic to assess the transfer case. An oil change might provide temporary relief, but defective gears will likely require a more involved repair. It's better to be safe.

I took your advice and consulted a technician. They confirmed defective gears in the transfer case. After replacement, the shifting is now smooth. The cost was as expected. Thanks for your help.
