My 2017 Mercedes X Klasse diesel has a malfunctioning multifunction steering wheel. The steering controls are unresponsive and there's an error stored. I suspect a cable connection inside the steering wheel. Has anyone else dealt with this? Is it fixable or does it need replacing?

It's unfortunate you're experiencing issues with your Mercedes-Benz X Klasse. The multifunction steering system integrates controls like audio, telephone, and cruise control, managed through a control module within the steering wheel or column. A defective cable connection could disrupt communication. Have you verified the power supply to the steering control module? Also, have you inspected the wiring harness leading to the steering column for damage or corrosion?

When you mention the power supply to the steering control module, are we talking about checking fuses, or something else? And regarding the wiring harness, is that easily accessible, or will I have to dismantle the steering column to get a good look?

Yes, checking the relevant fuses would be a good first step. Consult your vehicle's manual or a wiring diagram to identify the specific fuse. As for the wiring harness, its accessibility can vary. It may be partially visible after removing the steering column covers, but a thorough inspection might necessitate partial disassembly. Given the potential complexity and safety-critical components like the airbag system, proceed with caution. A diagnostic assessment by a qualified technician is advisable.

I checked the fuses first and they were fine. I took it to a shop and it was a broken cable inside the steering wheel, just like I thought. They replaced the cable for 95€ and everything is working again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
